Will the 2020 C8 be like the 2005 Lotus Elise?

I know the $60k stripper Corvette (which is still pretty well appointed) will not be the norm as the dealers sell cars the factory decides to build and allocate, but will those low spec cars become the perpetual $35k machines that were/are the 2005-2011 Lotus Elise and how long will that take?

For some quick answers I checked a Corvette Forum article where the author suggests that like all past Corvettes built in decent volumes the C8 will loose a good amount of value in 5-10 years.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/articles/future-c8-resale-values-will-be-like-every-corvette-generation/

Does that mean in 5 years I can go out and get hold of a $35k C8 unicorn? Will it then stay that way for a while? The author of the article above includes some used car site screenshots sowing the 2010 C6 in the 40-60k range. Most of those are Z06 so that skews things for me a bit. Although, who would pay $60k these days for a 2010 Z06 when the base C8 is probably better?

I am skipping over the idea of salvage title cars but I do remember a ton of the then being sold $54k Elise, selling for $30-35k with salvage titles due to the front clam being really expensive and issues if you messed up the chassis as it was bonded aluminum.

I was going to say that I couldn’t think of any other mid-engine cars that depreciated like that, but then I forgot about the MR2 and the Fiero.

I’m sure they will eventually depreciate, but maybe not quite as badly as other Corvettes?  They definitely don’t seem to get (or deserve?) the hate that some of the older Corvettes get.

2002 (C5) Z06, 45k miles - $20k

At some point, the C8 will be just another old Corvette.

Actually, it will be an old Corvette that is hard to wrench on because the engine isn’t under the front hood.

If it sells like every other generation of Corvette (which it will), I’d guesstimate the bottom to be ~5 k for a base model in 15-20 years.

Z’s will be worth more, but honestly, it makes no difference where the motor is. It’s a Corvette.

With any luck the C9 will be something you can actually look at, I would buy a C7 if I wanted a Vette.

I low key want a cheap c6 zr1. If they get low enough I wont be held responsible for my buying habits.

Imagine how good this will be for kit cars.

I test drove the Elise in 2008, the dealer was great, just gave me the keys and said don’t go too far because we keep them on empty. It was fantastic. No salesperson , my wife came along as passenger. I was young enough that at around the same period the Mazda dealership wouldn’t let me test drive something unless I made an appointment and came back. Then again when I test drove the Elise I think I borrowed my brother in laws BMW Z4 so that might have had something to do with it.

The elise is scarce and exceptionally unique.

The corvette is unique, but I   imagine it will depreciate at the same rate as the C7. As long as they keep making them and improving upon them, they will continue to depreciate.

It won’t be long before you can get a C7 for low 20's, and the soon will eventually be said of the C8.

That's my take on the matter.

Seems those are holding their value, locally I have not seem them dip below $ 60k. I dont see them having the drop like other Corvettes. They have the lower production numbers, but they were not super special cars. Even the C4 ZR1 with the DOHC LT5 dropped really low in vaule when they got to be 10-15 years old. They are now on that upward swing it seems.

Now C6 Z06s and even a 2014 Camaro Z28 have gotten really cheap. Would love something LS7 powered.

If the C8 used value gets stupid cheap, I can see them not being picked up for a cheap mid-rear engine car, but for gutting for the drivetrain and various suspension stuff like most C4 corvettes are used for. I just dont see these being super collectable in the long game in major collector circles. Supercar collectors will still pass on it as its not unique or special enough to keep for an investment like a Ferrari or Lambo.

Good point, the Elise was really low volume. That made it able to exist when it did but losing the ability to sneak around those air bag, bumper and headlight rules (I think those applied) also caused its demise in the US.

Its a little rich for me these days but its a goal car for sure! The MG luckily is dirt cheap to maintain and a blast for now

Something about the zr1s just seems to stand out as exotic to me, especially that frost blue paint. As someone who isn’t a fan of post c3 vette style, I couldn't tell you what it is.

They’ll get put into Autocross duty, like all of the cheap C5's and now C6's

You’re looking the wrong direction. A later production Manuel C7 in good condition will be worth more than a comparable C8 in 5- 10 years.

Yep. And my car’s just an old M3. It’d be worth something if it was pristine and had a third of the miles, but what fun would than have been these past 8 years?

I think it will become the most mass produced mid engine V8 engined car ever (until it beats itself with the C9, C10, etc.)
